“Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Teach them to observe all things that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20

We believe that we have been called to use the gifts God has given us to reach unbelievers for Him and to encourage, and build up His Church.

Two Days, Two Shows, Two Cities

Both shows were at Root Cellar Ministries, but Wednesday was in Lewiston and Thursday was Portland. Wednesday was the for a ladies' brunch and Thursday was for a community meal. Both gigs were performed by LOL, Windham Christian Academy's youth jugglers, and both were cool learning opportunities for these talented teens as well as, we trust, the audiences.

In Portland, we arrived in plenty of time to set up, warm up and still join the neighborhood ladies for brunch. The kids loved the chance to sit with the women and enjoy a piece of quiche. The group of women was quite diverse: Some African immigrants, some long time Mainers, a retired teacher, a Special Olympian, some ladies from the suburbs.

The evening show in Lewiston was for a community supper that other teens from WCA cooked: chicken Alfredo with pasta and broccoli. Approximately 40 neighbors of all ages came out, and the students who weren't performing served the meal. All but five of six guests were African or perhaps some young children of African immigrants/ refugees. Before the meal, Abdul, a boy of about 10 or so was hanging around, and he surely had a thing for the high school girls we had with us: holding their hands, even kissing their hands! He even joined the team for preministry prayer, and volunteered to be the one to pray out loud. I wasn't sure what to expect (which is sometimes true of when adults in church Volunteer to pray out loud, too.) I was pleasantly surprised and blessed that he prayed in Jesus name.

In the Portland show we did our regular set and added our partners juggling routine for the first time this school year. The ladies loved it all. In Lewiston, we cut our show down a bit due to both time constraints and themeatic concerns. Since 80% or more of the audience was Muslim, we were asked to focus on parables and miracles of Jesus, but not touch on the resurrection. I know the folks at the Root Cellar well enough to know this wasn't a request to compromise, but rather to use the same wisdom missionaries in foreign countries use. Small steps toward Christ are still steps in the right direction. The audience was remarkably quiet and attentive considering they were being served and eating dinner during the show.

We in southern Maine are so fortunate to have these two inner city missions within a short driving distance, and make no mistake, we are blessed to have so many new and future Americans coming here with their many skills, gifts and cultures.
