“Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Teach them to observe all things that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:19-20

We believe that we have been called to use the gifts God has given us to reach unbelievers for Him and to encourage, and build up His Church.

How Hurricane Sandy Turned my House into a Sorority

As I was setting up for our show on Halloween Wednesday night (See prior blog) Sue was tying balloon animals for the kids in the church's fellowship hall when she received a call from our daughters at college. Both Jona-Lynn (20) and Naomi (18) attend Nyack College just across the Hudson River from New York City. Two days prior the area was ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, and the college, among millions of other homes and businesses, had been without power ever since.

Worse for the college was the fact that the cafeteria was running out of food, and they were not able to get any shipments in. Add to that the live wires still down around campus, lack of sanitation and the city of Nyack's 6:00 curfew, and the school administration decided it was time to send the students to a safer location. Our girls would be heading out that night with a friend from Maine who owns a car, as well as two other young ladies: one from Houston and one from Vancouver. It was a little easier for them to come home with our girls than go to their own homes.

So, since 2:00 AM on Thursday, we have been overrun with college girls in our house. It has been wonderful to have our girls home, and Becky and Amy are sweethearts. Kristen, the car owner, spent one night with us then continued home. Sue has been ecstatic that her 'babies' came home unexpectedly, and Rose is enthralled with all these cool college kids sharing her space.

They have gotten word that school will reopen Monday, so Kristen will be picking them up tomorrow to go back. The cafeteria is supplied again, and in fact, will double as a feeding center for the city of Nyack while there are still families without power. Jo, who has work study at the cafeteria, has been told to expect more hours. As of now, we're told her dorm still is without power, but all in all the school will be ready to go next week.

It's been a joy having them here, and helping the cause of Sandy relief in this small way. We are looking forward to having them home for Thanksgiving... in two weeks!
