Between Eden and Eternity

Jan 06 2017

It's a fascinating journey, on this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.  Some daysI have sprinted for a lifetime before the sun even started to set; other days I would collapse on the side of the path to weep or sleep in the tall wildflowers and clover.  When the journey got overwhelming, I'd take breaks  to enjoy an ale in a pub.  I jogged, I walked, I hitchhiked, I skipped, I stumbled on this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.

Some day's the trail is overrun with brambles, often it's shrouded in fog. One day when I was still a young sojourner  I trudged through a blizzard while snowflakes accumulated on my eyelashes. I could have frozen in a snowbank on the side of the path if I had not received  the perfect antidote: a mug of my mothers magic cocoa. Once warmed, I threw my coat on again and played on the wintery path, swimming in snow up to my smile.

Its a fascinating journey, on this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.

I rambled as only a little boy does. I traveled by pirate ship and Batmobile, ponies and dromedaries. Would I spend today in Narnia or Neverland, Gotham or  Metropolis? I paused as my trip brought me through hayfields and ball fields, through backyards and schoolyards. One day I got lost in a graveyard in the suburbs.  And Mom's cocoa would never thaw me again.

Yet The trail still lay before me. Compelled to move on, I wandered on a path that was one day a highway the next a high wire. It's a fascinating journey on this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.

Eventually I happened upon a trickling brook through a glen in a woods. A brown eyed beauty in overalls crossed a stone bridge, and told me with a sad smile of her boy problems.  It took me four years to realize the boy was me and the problem was I had yet to look into those big brown eyes and see the angel behind them. But when I did, oh when I did! We held hands and never let go, and we travelled the narrow way together.  We traveled by mini van and airplane. When the journey got overwhelming, we'd take breaks to enjoy a meal in a pub.  We walked hand in hand on this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.

Three daughters joined us on the trip.  They stumbled and tumbled and whirled and twirled. They toddled and danced  together with us on the Way.  And they grew as we moved along the path. They jogged, they walked, they hitchhiked, they skipped, and then they grew wings and flew off on their own, but not before stopping by a pub for a glass of Merlot.  How could they have taken different ways while walking the same  narrow road?  Then again, how can three persons be one God? But impossible doesn't mean it's not true.  It's a fascinating journey this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.

As the sun rises again today, my brown eyed angel takes my hand for another day on this trail. We don't sprint so much any more. What we have lost in speed, though, we make up for in experience.  Whatever brambles and hills and rocks we encounter today we can handle as we press on.  It's a  fascinating journey this narrow trail between Eden and Eternity.
