Sunday morning, a crew of us from Windham Christian Academy were asked to present our school's ministry at a local Baptist church. As I planned the presentation with our principal and head of marketing, we decided to go with the theme "Myth Busters". We would attempt to bust five myths about Christian schooling.

I organized some members of LOL, my student juggling troupe, to tackle the myth that Christian Schools are guilty of sheltering kids from the real world. After a couple routines, I spoke about some of the places we visit on a regular basis: a psychiatric hospital, a residential school for non violent offenders, inner city missions, homeless feeding ministries, and more. I spoke of how we stayed four days in a Korean/American church, and spent the night in inner city Portland.

Another myth that was addressed was the caliber of the academics. Zeb, a junior, shared how he was taking a sophomore level math course at St. Joseph's College, and Brianna, a freshmen, shared an essay that won third place in the state of Maine (the only underclassman in the top 12) in a contest sponsored by the VFWs of Maine.

Emilee, a sophomore, showed off the ukulele she handmade in wood working class, played for the church. Then she told how, after all the students each made their own uke, they made an additional six to give to a local public school music class. "Christian schools view public schools as the enemy" was yet another myth to get busted that morning.

When you go to work each day, a job, even a job that is a ministry, can be just another routine. Sunday morning was a nice reminder to me that we do this for a reason and we are doing it well.
